What support is available?

An introduction to the support and services available at our university.

Background

Our Learning Support and Wellbeing Teams offer support, information and guidance on disability related matters within our University. Support is available to students with a range of disabilities and long term conditions such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD, Autism and Speech, Language and Communication Needs via the Disabled Student’s Allowance (DSA).

All our students are enrolled on an ‘Academic Skills’ module in their first year which teaches the academic skills necessary for University success.

All our tutors are very approachable and happy to explain difficult issues further if you ask for help.

Support is tailored on an individual basis in order to ensure access to the most effective support for you. Some examples of support other students have found useful are:

  • Exam or Assessment adjustments (e.g. extra time, use of a PC, etc.)

For students who have the DSA:

  • Strategies to support reading and research
  • Strategies to support writing assignments and referencing
  • Strategies for independence

There are also the following general support services:

University Wellbeing Service- Corrina Simmonds is our dedicated Wellbeing practitioner with responsibility for HE students. We also have a student counsellor who is based in the Wellbeing Hub.

How could this affect me?

Getting used to life as a University student can be a challenge for anyone.

It is important to know that there is support, information and resources available if you need them.

Talking to us about the support available, any questions or concerns you have, and visiting campus, might help you make a decision whether you want to study with us, and ensure you have the best possible university experience if you do.

What to do next?

Practical tips

Where possible we would suggest you contact our HE Learning Support team as soon you have an offer of a place, even if you haven’t decided that you are definitely studying with us. This will give us plenty of time to talk about your support, give you an opportunity to look around our campus and ensure any support is in place for when you start.

The best way to contact our HE Learning Support team is via email:  HELearningSupport@Sparsholt.ac.uk

You can also ask your tutor to contact us, or you can drop into the Library and ask at the front desk. They will contact us on your behalf- you do not need to tell them why you need to contact the HE Learning Support team if you would rather not.
